Use and Maintenance of Battery

·Use and Maintenance of Battery
Although maintenance-free batteries don't need special maintenance work, there are still some requirements. Improper use can affect the battery’s life. The factors that matter are as follows: installation, temperature, charge and discharge current, charge voltage, discharge depth and long-term recharge and so on.

1. The battery installation

The battery should be installed in a place as clean, cool, ventilated, dry as possible, and should avoid sunlight, heaters or other heat sources of radiation effects; the battery should be placed upright with no angle of tilt; the terminals between batteries should be firmly connected.

2. Ambient temperature

The ambient temperature has greater impact on the battery. When the ambient temperature is too high, the battery will overcharge and produce gas, and when the ambient temperature is too low, the battery will not charge enough, which will affect battery life, Therefore the general requirements of the ambient temperature is about 25 .

3. Charge and discharge current

The battery charge and discharge current is generally marked as C, and the actual value of C is related to the battery capacity. For example, if the battery is 100AH, then C equals to 100A. The best charge current of lead-acid maintenance-free battery is around 0.1C, and no more than 0.3C. Too high or too low charge current will affect the battery life. The discharge current is generally between 0.05 C and 3C. UPS can satisfy this requirement in normal use, but there are also some unexpected situations like short-circuit.

4. Charge voltage

As UPS battery works in spare mode, it is in the state of charging when the city electric supply is normal,, and it will discharge only when there is a power failure . In order to extend the battery life, most chargers are commonly controlled by constant-voltage and limited current. When the battery is full, it will turn to floating state, and each battery is set at about 13.7V float voltage. If the charge voltage is too high, the battery will overcharge; otherwise, the battery will undercharge. Charge voltage anomaly may be caused by the battery configuration errors, or charger malfunctions, so when installing the battery, we must pay attention to the correctness of the specifications and quantities of batteries. Different specifications, different batches of batteries cannot be mix-used. Do not use inferior chargers, and pay attention to heat dissipation problem when installing.

5. Depth of discharge

Depth of discharge have deep impact on battery life-the deeper the depth of battery discharge, the fewer its recycling times, so we should avoid the depth of discharge when using batteries. Although most UPS batteries have low potential protection function, generally when a single battery discharges to 10.8V, it will alarm rapidly; when it discharges to 10.5V or so, it will automatically shut down. But if the UPS is in light-load or no load discharge, it also may cause the battery’s deep discharge.

6. Regular maintenance

The battery should be inspected regularly when in use, such as observing whether its appearance is normal or not, measuring whether the battery voltage is average or not. If there is no outage for a long time, the battery will always be in charge state and its activity will get slow. Therefore, even is there is no outage, UPS batteries need to be discharged regularly to maintain its activity. In general, the discharge experiment can be conducted once in three months.
